John Street Pedestrian Crossing11.40.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 18th Jun 2010
As residents will know from past Talkbacks and press coverage Liberal Democrat Councillor Chris Collis, has been pressing the County Council's Highways Authority for the provision of an electronically operated pedestrian crossing for John Street, Wimblebury for several years now. People know Chris has a strong reputation for not being the type of person whom gives up easily on a cause, clearly evidenced by the manner in which he has continually striven on behalf of the residents of Wimblebury, to get the Highways Authority to install this desperately needed crossing. In fact Councillor Collis yet again raised the need for a crossing at the last Heath Hayes, Wimblebury, Norton Canes and Rawnsley Forum meeting held on Wednesday 9th, June. After Chris had spoken on this issue the senior highways officer present, confirmed that they now accepted that there was a need for a pelican crossing and stated that design work would be undertaken during the autumn of this year, to enable construction to start during the early part of the next financial year which starts in March 2011. Chris Collis said, "It has been hard work and taken far longer than I would have liked to get Staffordshire Highways Authority to finally accept what I and residents have been calling for, however, I am so pleased that by working together we have successfully achieved our aim for the provision of a pedestrian crossing on this very busy road, and I thank everyone whom has given me their support and help. "I will of course continue to monitor the situation to make sure that the Highways Authority does in fact honour their commitment to the community in question, rest assured I will take whatever action is appropriate to hopefully bring this matter to a swift and successful conclusion."
