Senior Liberal Democrat Councillor Tony Williams whom has been at the forefront of the campaign to return the former Pear Tree pub site back into a useful community resource, is pleased to report that the application for 3 retail units on the site in question was approved by Cannock Chase Council's Planning Committee on Wednesday 3rd, December, with the main unit being used for a CO-OP store.
A Shining Example of the Kind of Top Quality Shops In Rugeley Town Centre
The meeting heard that the highways department at the County Council would not reconsider the traffic issues that Councillor Tony Williams and residents had raised about large lorries waiting to turn on to the site from Queensway, and the noise that would be created by these vehicles reversing on site. The main concern was the vehicles would cause tail backs with only one entrance proposed for in and out movements of delivery vehicles. When there could easily be an entrance to the rear from Hednesford Road and the vehicle could then exit on to Queensway taking away the need for reversing movements on the car park.
Whilst the attitude of the County Council's Highways Department to our concerns is disappointing, many residents have said they will be glad to see the eyesore at the entrance to the Pear Tree estate demolished and we must remember that the new facilities would be ideal for the older residents who currently have to struggle in to town on the unreliable estate bus service for their shopping.
Tony said,"This on the back of the Tesco application, the recent move to our town by Peacocks and the opening this week of Costa Coffee, is a clear indication that the District Council's led regeneration of Rugeley Town centre is well underway and on course to return our cherished town back to its former glory."
Tony is keen to assure Pear Tree residents that this new development will NOT connect to the existing drainage system on the Pear Tree estate, it will be linked directly into the main sewer that runs down the centre of Hednesford Road.
